The $160bn exodus: what does the number measure? REPRODUCE THIS INVESTIGATION Repeat the chart checks with a calculator or the downloadable CSV. You do not need confidential tax records to check what the headline's number represents. You will need: A browser and calculator, or a spreadsheet application; Python is optional ACCESS AND DATA LIMITS These steps reproduce published estimates and our arithmetic, not individual net worth or tax status. Full article access may require a subscription; the original public chart is linked separately. The chart transcription contains public facts, not Bloomberg's article text or images. WORKING FILES Source notes: https://tallycat01.com/downloads/billionaire-exodus-160-billion-source-notes.txt Timeline: https://tallycat01.com/downloads/billionaire-exodus-160-billion-timeline.csv 1. Read the original wording Open Bloomberg's Instagram post. Notice that the headline describes what departing people are worth. Keep its caption about London's reputation separate from a quantified tax-loss claim. Keep in mind: Do not turn a possible implication into a quotation the author did not make. Open the original post: https://www.instagram.com/bloombergbusiness/p/DeHNmOnnIB_/ 2. Open the chart and its notes Read all 14 rows, the shared-family asterisks and the September 29 valuation date. Compare the chart with the downloaded CSV, which preserves each entry's estimate and source. Keep in mind: Two rows each name two people. A row count is not an individual-emigrant count. Open Bloomberg's public chart: https://www.bloomberg.com/toaster/v2/charts/kjxjcuhy292eld83bsbk9oojvecmkrw1 3. Sum the estimates Sum estimated_usd_billion across every CSV row once. In a spreadsheet, the numeric values are in F2:F15. They are all in US$ billions. SUM(F2:F15) = 158.3 ROUND(158.3 / 10, 0) * 10 = 160 Keep in mind: The second line demonstrates compatible rounding, not a published Bloomberg rounding instruction. 4. Check the shared-family subset Filter family_shared_flag to True, then sum only the four remaining estimates. Divide by the full total if you want the share. 23.3 + 18 + 5.3 + 3.2 = 49.8 49.8 / 158.3 * 100 = 31.4592546%, or 31.5% Keep in mind: This subset is part of the total. It is not an extra sum or an amount demonstrated to be overstated. 5. Inspect the selected residence filings Open each linked form and find the field for country or state of usual residence, together with its effective date. The four 2025 changes corroborate recent moves for the named people. Keep in mind: A company-register declaration is not an HMRC tax-residence ruling. It does not establish the destination of every asset or family member, or the reason for the move. Separate wealth, transactions and tax Read the ONS Capital account paragraph and HMRC guidance on UK income after moving abroad. These explain why a relocation does not automatically mean every asset leaves or every UK tax liability disappears. Keep in mind: They do not establish that the economic effect is zero. ONS measurement definitions: https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nationalaccounts/balanceofpayments/methodologies/balanceofpayments HMRC tax guidance: https://www.gov.uk/tax-uk-income-live-abroad 7. Check dates before judging policy impact Open HMRC's July 2026 release and inspect the original workbook coverage. Then compare the OBR report's paragraph 3.60 and the April 2026 supplementary costing. Keep pre-reform observations and later forecasts distinct. HMRC latest annual coverage: 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025 New regime begins: 6 April 2025 Keep in mind: Neither an earlier aggregate nor a forecast settles the observed 2026 impact of Bloomberg's selected group.
